Lord of the Flies, setting & atmosphere

It Was Ours
(Words from Lord of the Flies - William Golding)

Can you imagine
That glorious moment
When from the square top we saw the island,
Boat-shaped and circled by a
Horizon of water

Tide running streaks,
Jungle's
jumbling
descent
into the beaches and coral reefs;
Scar jagged that marked our arrival.
Palms green-feathered
Reaching
for the skies
Vines creeping
Coarse grass beneath our bare feet

Invisible, the heat.
From the flowered half-cirque
We saw our world

The island breathed life
And it was ours.
